History Journals
Many research projects assigned by Brooks history teachers require the use of an article from a scholarly journal. The following journals are considered scholarly (written by historians for their peers). Note that to access Brooks's Luce Library Electronic Resources is currently restricted to the on-campus network. Off-site researchers should try their local library web site, as library card holders are usually allowed to use their electronic resources.

American Heritage (1954-current): A classy, respected, well-written magazine, with articles written by leading historians for the general public. Though not technically correct, the Brooks History Department does consider American Heritage acceptable as a scholarly journal.

The American Historical Review (1931- current): "American Historical Review is the oldest scholarly journal of history in the United States and the largest in the world. Begun in 1895, the AHR is the scholarly voice of the American Historical Association, a body chartered by Congress to oversee and protect the historiographical legacy of the United States. Thus its primary mission is the dissemination and evaluation of historical scholarship."

Essays in Medieval Studies: proceedings of the Illinois Medieval Association; all issues from volume 1 (1984) are online

The Journal of American History (1964 - current) "The Journal of American History remains the leading scholarly publication and journal of record in the field of American history and is well known as the major resource for the study, investigation, and teaching of our country's heritage. Each volume contains interpretive essays on all aspects of American history, plus reviews of books, films, movies, television programs, museum exhibits and resource guides, as well as microform, oral history, archive and manuscript collections, bibliographies of scholarship contained in recent scholarly periodicals and dissertations."

History Cooperative: Accessable only if you have a subscription to the American Historical Review or the Journal of American History. Archive contains articles from American Historical Review, The History Teacher, Western Historical Quarterly, The William and Mary Quarterly, and the Journal of American History.
History Today: highly-respected journal of world history. Published monthly since 1951. Online access only to articles from the past three months without registration, 12 months if registered. Online subscription gets you full text since January 1980.

Journal of the Association for History and Computing: peer-reviewed e-journal focusing on issues related to the use of technology and the Internet in teaching and researching history. Published three times per year since 1998.
Journal of Modern History: leading American quarterly journal for the study of European intellectual, political, and cultural history. Published by the University of Chicago. Online archive goes back to March 2000.
Journal for Multimedia History: the first peer-reviewed electronic journal that presents, evaluates, and disseminates multimedia historical scholarship, based at SUNY Albany
